Oliver Howard was born in Leeds, Maine, the son of Rowland Bailey Howard and Eliza Otis Howard. Rowland, a farmer, died when Oliver was 9 years old. Oliver attended Monmouth Academy in Monmouth, North Yarmouth Academy in Yarmouth, Kents Hill School in Readfield, and graduated from Bowdoin College in 1850 at the age of 19. Eduoard Chambreau was born in 1821 in Froeshville, France, and emigrated to Canada at age 4. He attended the Sisters School in Montreal, was a member of the Society of Patriots for which he was arrested and briefly imprisoned in 1837. Apprenticed to a tailor, he left Montreal to join the circus, traveling for several years.
